Schlössle-Galerie
Schlössle-Galerie / Pforzheim / Germany
The Schlössle-Galerie is a shopping centre in the city centre of Pforzheim, Germany, with approximately 16,000 m² of retail space, 700 m² for restaurants/food courts, 2,400 m² of office space and 374 parking places in a dedicated two-storey garage on top of the shopping centre.
A very special feature is the roof garden, which covers the complete, lightly sloped, concrete roof. This garden was designed with grass areas, trees, plants, a playground for children, walkways and a wooden terrace with a panoramic view over the hills of Pforzheim into the “Schwarzwald”. It is open to the public and is highly frequented during the summer months.
This stand-alone building is the architectural eye-catcher of Pforzheim. Built in a slope, the yellow natural stone facades on both sides of the building increase in height towards the Westliche-Karl-Friedrich-Straße, until they abruptly become a full height glass façade, giving the impression of glass emerging from a rock wall. The entrance side of the building is covered by a 17 metres high aluminium glass facade, to which wooden panels have been attached in a playful manner. To help create a remarkable skyline in the city centre, Multi designed an open steel roof construction. It stands on columns and covers the pavement in front of the building.
The shopping centre itself is oval shaped on 3 levels, connected by staircases, escalators and elevators. Daylight shines through the glass roof covering the rear side of the oval and light comes in through the high entrance hall façade. Between these glass areas a huge light panel deck shines in many colours with light effects that make the shopping centre appear bright and warm. The choice of materials and art works reinforce this brightness and warmth.
The project extends the inner city A1 location, offering Pforzheim the necessary retail mix it was missing, particularly young fashion and restaurants / food concepts. By filling this gap the Schlössle-Galerie has significantly enhanced the multifunctional inner city concept, offering gastronomy and entertainment through the late evenings, bringing people back to the inner city.
Schlössle-Galerie opened in March 2005.
