Almada Forum
Almada Forum / Almada / Portugal
The Prime Minister of Portugal, José Manuel Durão Barroso, opened Almada Forum in September 2002. The second largest shopping centre in Portugal, it is located on the south bank of the River Tagus close to the 25th April bridge, and is clearly visible from the main A2 motorway linking Lisbon with Southern Portugal and Spain. Some 700,000 people live within its catchment area and are less than a 30-minute drive away. The centre attracted 20 million visitors in the first year.
There are 260 shops on three floors and the total retail surface is 77,850 m². The anchor stores are Jumbo, FNAC, Lusomundo, Zara, C&A, Toys’ R Us, Sportzone, Cortefiel, H&M and Chimarrão. There are 35 restaurants, a 14 screens cinema, a 2,000 m² leisure area and two floors of underground free parking for 5,050 cars.
The main entrance leads to the central square. A wide-open area with abundant natural light, almost creating a winter garden, forms the hallmark of the project.
Special features, among the many original designs in the centre, are two themed and imaginatively decorated squares. The eastern square has a circular atrium dedicated to nature, with an enormous rock emerging organically from the basement. It is decorated with a variety of natural and exotic plants and a waterfall, culminating in an enormous glass cupola. Here people find shops for family and household goods, such as, C&A, Toys’R Us, Casa, Divani & Divani, Benetton and Salsa.
In the western square the theme is science and technology, with less natural light and a youthful urban atmosphere based on light effects with lasers and holograms. In this section visitors find shops like Fnac, Zara, Bershka and Mango.
The design of the food court is based on an old fishing village and the beaches of the nearby Caparica coastline. It is a reminder of the time when Almada was on the bank of the river.
The shopping centre has become the new centre of Almada, a place to stroll and relax, suitably equipped with leisure and entertainment and an exclusive retail mix. Almada Forum received an honorary commendation at ICSC’s 2003 European conference, the MIPIM Award in 2003 for Best European Shopping Centre and in 2004 the ICSC Full Design Award.
